Getting started with aromatherapy

HomeBlogGetting started with aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a holistic natural healthcare system that uses essential oils to promote health and wellbeing, physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Essential oils can be inhaled ‘neat’ from the bottle, a tissue, or some aroma jewellery.

They can also be diluted in water and diffused (‘burned’)  in an oil burner or diffuser, or diluted in a carrier oil and applied to the skin.

There are several ways to use essential oils in various ways, including:

  • Aromatherapy baths, including foot baths and sitz baths
  • Compresses
  • Diffusion
  • General topical use
  • Inhalation from a bottle or tissue
  • Massage
  • Skin & hair care

When diluting essential oils to apply to the skin or hair, the general safe guidelines are 6 drops of essential oil per 10ml of carrier oil (a 2% dilution). However, the dilutions for various recipes range from 0.5% – 5%, and can go as high as 20% for acute cases.
